Projects You Can Volunteer With 🌊
Ready to get your hands wet and help the ocean? Here are some fantastic organizations where you can volunteer and contribute to marine conservation.
- TRACC (Tropical Research and Conservation Centre): Based on Pom Pom Island, TRACC works to rebuild reefs using artificial structures and 3D printed reefs. As a volunteer, you get to do hands-on work with coral planting and marine debris removal.
- Reef Check Malaysia (RCM): This non-profit works with local communities to manage marine resources. Their Community Marine Conservation Groups (CMCGs) conduct important reef surveys and remove harmful ghost nets.
- Marine Research Foundation (MRF): Located in Sabah, this NGO is a champion for sea turtles, sharks, and rays. They work with local fishers to reduce bycatch, using cameras to monitor shark populations.
- PMRS (Perhentian Marine Research Station): This station protects ecosystems through research and community projects. They have a youth program that trains locals in scuba diving and coral surveys, empowering them to become stewards of their own environment.
- Scuba Junkie SEAS: A grassroots charity on Mabul Island, Scuba Junkie SEAS focuses on hands-on conservation. You can get involved in turtle nest protection, reef restoration, and daily beach clean-ups. You can even adopt a baby turtle!
Knowing that your dives are helping to protect these incredible ecosystems is a great way to make your hobby even more rewarding. It’s time to dive in and get involved!
