Don’t Get Fooled by Your Cable Company: How to Lower Your Internet Bill Today

If you’re like me, you’ve probably watched your internet bill steadily increase over the years. We’ve all been there, feeling stuck with our cable company and believing there’s nothing we can do about it. But I’m here to tell you that now is the perfect time to fight back.

Cable companies like Comcast and Charter (Spectrum) are in a panic because they are losing customers to cheaper and faster alternatives like fiber and 5G wireless. Last year, Spectrum and Comcast lost hundreds of thousands of internet customers, and their stock prices are a reflection of their fear.

They are highly motivated to keep their existing customers, and you can use this to your advantage. I’m going to share a simple trick that saved me a significant amount of money and even got me a speed upgrade. It’s not about being confrontational, but about knowing the secret way to get access to promotions that are typically hidden from us.

You’re going to call them, but you’re not going to talk to just anyone. You’re going straight to the person whose job it is to keep you from leaving, and they have the power to give you what you want.

💡 The Secret to Getting a Better Deal

The trick is to get past the standard customer service department and into the retention department. The easiest way to do this is by using the automated phone system to select the option that indicates you want to cancel your service. This might sound nerve-wracking, but trust me, they won’t just disconnect you. The retention department exists for the express purpose of pumping the brakes on cancellations and talking things out.

When you get a rep on the line, just tell them you’re thinking about canceling or that you want to discuss the logistics of canceling in the future. This is usually all it takes to set their promotional gears in motion. In my personal experience with Spectrum, a mildly tedious conversation with a friendly rep led to my bill dropping from $68 to $45 per month for a full year, and my speeds increased from 400 Mbps to 500 Mbps.

⚔️ The Competition That Gives You Power

The power you have as a customer today is all thanks to a new wave of competition. Wireless internet from companies like T-Mobile and Verizon is often cheaper, with plans starting at around $35 per month when bundled with mobile service.

Fiber, from providers like AT&T, offers faster, symmetrical upload and download speeds, and can also be cheaper than cable. This market pressure is forcing cable giants to finally offer competitive prices and simplified plans, and even reverse policies like data caps. The reality is that they don’t want to lose you. So, if your polite inquiry for a better deal doesn’t work, maybe it really is time to start looking at those other, more competitive options.
