In an email to the Villanova community, University President Rev. Peter M. Donohue confirmed that the active shooter alert on campus Thursday was a “cruel hoax.” He stated that no one was injured and there was no evidence of a shooter or firearms on campus.
The alert, which reported a possible shooter at the Law School, caused “panic and terror” during the Orientation Mass intended to welcome new students and their families.
In his message, President Donohue apologized to the first-year students and their families, saying, “This is not the introduction to Villanova that I had hoped for you.” He also thanked the Villanova Public Safety department, Radnor Police, and other first responders for their calm and compassionate handling of the frightening situation.
The President acknowledged that the day’s events had “shaken our entire community” but expressed gratitude that everyone was safe. He concluded by promising to share more information as it becomes available and announced that the interrupted Orientation Mass will be offered again later in the year.
