It’s a random occurrence that you’ll be notified of with a global message. When the migration begins, a special school, or ‘abundance,’ of orcas will appear in The Ocean.
This abundance moves constantly in a straight line, which is indicated on your map by a blue arrow. You’ll need to sail your boat to intercept this moving school to find your fishing spot. The key to catching the Ancient Orca is using the right bait: a Shark Head. This is a rare bait, so I always make sure to have a good supply ready for when a migration starts.
Even with the right bait and location, the chances are slim. The base chance of hooking an Ancient Orca is a mere 0.5% (1 in 200). However, there’s another layer of rarity. There is a 5% chance that a migration will be an ‘Albine’ (the old name for Ancient) Orca Migration, which likely increases the odds of finding one. The school is also limited; only 5 Ancient Orcas can be caught per migration event, so you’re competing with every other angler on the server.

I save these exclusively for hunting Secret fish like the Ancient Orca. Using Merlin’s Luck at the start of a migration can dramatically cut down on the time it takes to get that coveted bite. It’s a strategy I also recommend for other high-rarity catches like the elusive Toilet Fish.
