Happy Gilmore 2 Review: Still Tapping It In?

A huge fan of the original Happy Gilmore had low expectations for this sequel. The movie largely met those low expectations. It provides the simple enjoyment of returning to a familiar world.

The Unshakable Power of Nostalgia

The film has many issues. It cannot touch the quality of the original. However, seeing old faces and feeling the nostalgia is its main strength. This alone makes it somewhat enjoyable, despite its flaws.

A Story of Hits and Misses

Some story choices are confusing. For instance, certain characters are still on the golf tour after 30 years. But the story is not a carbon copy of the first film. This is a benefit. Still, some of the new plot points are written very poorly.

Trading Timeless Charm for a Modern Look

The sequel also loses the visual charm of the original. The first movie has a timeless feel. This one has a modern, oversaturated digital look. Many of the sets feel boring and less creative.

Heavy-Handed Fan Service

The movie relies heavily on nostalgia. It frequently shows clips from the original film when a character or joke is reintroduced. This seems intended for new audiences, not for original fans.

Flat Jokes and Fun Cameos

Most new jokes do not land well. They are either slightly amusing or cringy. The celebrity cameos, however, are surprisingly fun. Forgiveness for the film’s faults comes from the joy of being in its world again.

Adam Sandler’s Return

It is hard to dislike Adam Sandler’s return as Happy. There seems to be sincerity in his performance. An optimist might think he did this to give back. A pessimist might think it was just another contractual obligation for Netflix.
