How to Fix Your Old iPad When It Can’t Load Modern Websites Anymore 🍎

I know how frustrating it can be when a perfectly good device suddenly stops working with modern websites. One reader, Tony Elliot, was having this problem with his old iPad, which was stuck on iOS 12.5.7. He found that some online forms wouldn’t work, and the iPad would freeze for a few seconds. He wondered if Apple was deliberately doing this to force him to buy a new iPad, but the real reason is much simpler.

Table of Contents

The iPad is simply showing its age. The iOS version it’s running was released in 2018, and the tablet itself is even older. The Safari web browser hasn’t received a significant update in seven years, and web technology has moved on in that time. Many modern websites use features your dated browser can’t handle, and this situation will only get worse.

How to Squeeze Extra Life Out of Your iPad

If you’re not ready to buy a new iPad, you may be able to keep your old one going a bit longer by enabling Safari’s ‘experimental features’. These features aren’t really experimental by today’s standards and might allow some of the problem websites to work properly. You can find this setting by opening Settings, then on the left, tapping Safari. Next, on the right, tap Advanced, followed by Experimental Features.

You’ll see a list of features with sliders beside each one. You can probably turn them all on without causing any problems. However, if you have the patience, it’s better to activate a couple at a time and check all is well before activating more. That way, if a problem arises, you’ll know which feature to switch off again.

What About Your Old Laptop?

It’s not just iPads that become obsolete. An old Windows 10 laptop won’t upgrade to Windows 11 if it doesn’t have a TPM 2.0 chip. However, you can still use it for offline tasks. You could even try installing a Linux distro to get a new operating system. You could also use a screen-sharing app like GlideX to turn your old laptop into a second monitor for your new PC. It’s a great way to give an old device a new lease of life.
