🎯 Understand visual weight and balance
Each element in your photo has visual weight—some parts attract attention more than others. A bright color, a face, or strong lines carry weight. Your job is to balance these elements so no part overwhelms the rest.
Use the rule of thirds to place key subjects off-center. Divide your frame into a 3×3 grid and position people, horizons, or focal points along the lines or intersections. This adds tension and movement.
📐 Lines, curves, and shapes
Leading lines guide the viewer’s eye through your frame. Roads, fences, and shadows can all direct attention toward your subject. Curves suggest elegance and softness—great for portraits or architecture. Triangles and repeating shapes add rhythm.
Don’t be afraid to crop tight. Fill the frame with your subject or use negative space—empty areas around the subject—to create breathing room and focus.
🧠 Develop your eye with challenges
Give yourself mini-assignment: shoot ten frames where the main subject isn’t centered. Then try photos where the background is more important than the subject. Or shoot a series using only shadows.
Study paintings, movie stills, and photo books. Analyze how great visuals use light, lines, and color. Over time, you’ll internalize these lessons and instinctively apply them.
