I know many of us are attached to Google Chrome, as it has been the world’s most popular browser since 2012. But a new challenger is on the horizon. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, looks set to launch its own browser in the coming weeks. It’s called Aura according to references found in ChatGPT’s code , and it could be a major threat to Chrome’s dominance .
Aura has been built using Google’s Chromium code, which is the code behind every major browser except Firefox. This means it will have similar levels of speed and security to Chrome. But sources close to the project say Aura will combine traditional Browse with powerful AI-driven features to make it easier and faster to find what you want.
What Makes Aura Different?
Aura is likely to focus on presenting search results through ‘conversations’ rather than links. Reports say it will have ChatGPT built in and be powered by SearchGPT, OpenAI’s AI-powered search engine. It will also use Operator, an OpenAI tool for automatically performing online tasks like filling out forms and placing online orders. This combination of speed, security, and AI could make it the biggest ever challenger to Google Chrome.
The imminent launch of Aura suggests that OpenAI may not have to consider buying Chrome, which they said they would if US judges ordered Google to sell it. I believe this could be the start of a new internet era, where an AI-powered browser could make Chrome redundant overnight.
Is It Safe to Use AI Chatbots for URLs?
While AI browsers and tools can be very helpful, it’s important to be cautious. Researchers at a UK security firm found that when they asked chatbots for the login URLs for 50 sites, they were given inaccurate URLs nearly a third of the time. In one case, a chatbot’s top suggestion for a bank’s URL was a scam site. The advice is simple: never ask a chatbot for a URL, as they’re not reliable enough yet.
