“It Was Straight Panic”: An Eyewitness Account from the Manhattan Shooting

I want to share a story with you from someone who was right there, caught in the middle of the chaos during the recent Manhattan shooting. Imagine being locked down in your office for hours, not knowing exactly what was happening just a couple of blocks away. That’s what Shad, who works at 399 Park Avenue, experienced.

🔒 Trapped for Nearly Three Hours

Shad and his colleagues were told to shelter in place for what felt like an eternity. “For about like 2 and 1 half, 3 hours, we were stuck in there,” he said. “They told us to stay put. They told us that there was something happening outside and it’s not safe to be out there.”

They received very little official information from their company, relying on news articles and friends for updates. The initial moments were filled with fear. “We weren’t for sure like we didn’t know whether it was our building at first,” Shad explained. “So we were, you know, it was straight panic right off the bat.”

“It’s Just Crazy to Hear Something is Happening So Close”

The most unsettling part for Shad was how close the danger was. “I walk that way all the time. Like I get lunch there. I sit there,” he shared. The area where the gunman walked was his daily route. “You hear about it on the news, but then when it’s right there, it’s it’s it’s crazy.”

This feeling of shock was made worse when he saw the images of the suspect walking with an assault rifle. “Those same steps, that that same area, I walk through that all the time… It just again just puts it into perspective. You don’t know what’s going to happen to you.”

Frantic Calls to Friends

The panic intensified when Shad realized his friends also worked in the area. “It took me a second to realize, wait a minute, I have other people here too,” he recalled. “So I started calling people up. Uh thankfully they were okay. Some people didn’t come in today, which is great.”

This event is a sobering reminder of how quickly a normal day can turn into a terrifying one. As Shad put it, “You think it’s not going to happen to you and then it does, right?”
