🚨 What Happened?
The incident took place on East 52nd Street between Park and Lexington Avenues sometime after 6 p.m. This is a very busy area, especially at the end of the workday, with major offices, banks, and an MTA station nearby.
At least two people were shot, including a police officer. The NYPD commissioner has stated that the scene is now contained and the shooter has been neutralized. Sources are reporting that the shooter took his own life.
👀 Eyewitnesses in Shock
People in the area described a very scary situation. Witnesses reported hearing “popping” gunshots and seeing the shooter walk into a building carrying an AR-15. Many businesses in the area were put under a shelter-in-place order for 30 to 45 minutes as the event unfolded.
One reporter on the scene noted that people were looking at pictures of the suspect in “awe” and “shock,” unable to believe someone would walk through such a busy area with a weapon like that.
🕵️ The Suspect and Investigation
The suspect was seen on camera striding with purpose down Park Avenue. He appeared to be wearing a business suit and sunglasses while openly carrying the AR-15.
The police presence is massive, and they have shut down a large perimeter, spanning several blocks. SkyFox video showed officers searching a black BMW, which a witness said may have contained victims of the shooting. The investigation is still very active as authorities piece together all the details.
