This is the written version of a tips and tricks video I made for Mortal Sin. The guide is meant for beginners, but maybe you will learn something if you been around the block.

Tips and Tricks

Introduction

So I heard you bought Mortal Sin recently and you’re having trouble completing your first run. Well, don’t worry I got you. Welcome to Mortal Sin 101 where I can tell you how to be unstoppable! I’ll split this guide into sections, what you should have in mind: Before, During, and After a run. Ready? Let’s get it.

Before The Run

The Basics of Mortal Sin

When you start, you’ll be shown a list of classes that you can pick from. You’re going to want to read what each class has stat wise and what they can do. All classes have different abilities and weapon preference. If you just started you’ll only have The Struggler. If you played a bit you might have more. Whatever class you find yourself choosing, combos are vital to every class.

How to Have Good Offense And Defense

The weapon attack, kick, bash, and the active class ability all help you form a combo. Some short combos lead into a thrust that you can use to activate other combos and hold down to do more damage. Every class does things differently, but all of them have combos that give a bonus of some kind like granting invincibly, causing an explosion, doing your taxes, you get the point. By pressing escape you can see the combos. You can practice those combos on the punching bag. At the start you won’t have everything, even when you unlock everything you don’t need to use all of them. Not only is comboing good for damage, but also essential to building the meter. The more meter you get the more essence you get. You can use the auto combo system too, but the complex ones have the best effects so remember that. Secondary to knowing good offense, you need good defense.

In combat you will be allowed to block and parry attacks without interruption to your combo meter, in fact you get more meter for it. When you block you will see a meter go up. This is your poise meter, when it maxes out you won’t be able to block anymore for a short time. Obviously you don’t want this to happen because it can be a swift death. Parrying uses less of the meter. If you have great timing you can defend yourself for much longer.

Route Planning/Unlocking

On the default controls if you press T on the keyboard, you will see the routes you can go in the dungeons, caves, and forest (If you unlocked it) in any order. You can mix in trials of resolve if you are feeling daring. More importantly under stage levels you will see a small picture. That’s something for you to unlock. When you just start you will have nothing, but as you go on you will want to have everything unlocked so you can have a better chance at winning. Trust me, you are going to want the potion shop. You might want the smithy slot machine too, but I personally hate it. Gambling is rough. Even when you unlocked everything, but can’t quite win yet, you still might want to consider different routes based on the quests given to you in that moment. You may not want to do a no potion use quest late into the run because it can get hard. On the other hand it might be pretty free if you do it early on. Also consider the rewards that you get when completing it. There’s a chance of a free equipment upgrade, money, rare armor, and getting rid of a curse.

During The Run

Fight Rooms

In every room you will have to step on buttons to activate the way forward. 1 button will likely start a fight and spawn enemies. You can give yourself an advantage by positioning yourself to be able to see everything around you like the different kind of traps. Before starting the fight you charge an attack too.

Strategic Dismemberment

When you fight enemies you will notice that you cut off limbs. All monsters react in different ways when you cut specific body parts, so let me tell you what happens for each one cut off. Cutting the head will make the enemy flail around attacks unpredictably. Cutting the arms will make the enemy only kick, but can still move at full speed. Cutting the legs will allow the enemy to attack but moves very slowly. Attacking the torso will still kill the enemy, but it will take the longest. So consider the habits. What do you need to do to take less damage? You can go about it in anyway, just consider what you need in the moment.

Gear Progression & Maintenance

While you might be naked at the start you will get new weapons and armor through corpses and chests. All gear has a level attached, can have stats, and might have a passive on it. Think about the stats I talked about before and the class you chose.

What build do you want to go with? I’ve personally found focusing on 2 stats works best. For my Duelist, I prefer to play offensively so I looked for luck and speed. Attack was fine, but I ignored HP and Defense. You may not want to play like me and focus on HP and Defense, especially if you play the paladin class that gives more damage the more defense you have. The “Body Slam” passive can be found on equipment as well. All gear has durability.

Weapon Durability goes down when you block. Armor Durability goes down when you take a clean hit. Both go down when certain passives are activated like waveblade. On the bottom left and right of the screen you will see your HP potion and Wizard Oil.

Wizard Oil is used to repair your equipment. If you need more oil making it to the end of a room and getting to a boss room gives a small refill. Also breaking crates and pottery have the chance of giving a refill too. Sometimes a store will spawn as well, but those cost money and if you are deep in a run that can get expensive. However making sure your gear doesn’t break is important, so it might be worth buying. I personally like having 3 of each potion and letting the last one fill on it’s own as it saves a little bit of money.

Additional Info: If you do not like any of the passive skills rewarded to you at the end of the room that’s ok you can re-roll them for a small fee.

Curses and Gauging Risk vs Reward

During a run you will come across curses. Curses give both an up and down side. You can purge a curse and only have the benefit, but you aren’t guaranteed to be able to do this. To cleanse a curse you must find a statue or complete a quest that can cleanse a curse. This is why I said, “Think about your rewards for completing the quest”. If you get a curse and you can’t cleanse it, she can if you have that reward. If you have multiple curses a random one is chosen. Make sure you can handle the curse until you find a way to cleanse the curse. If I see a curse with a bonus I want, I don’t pick it up immediately. I look to see if there’s a portal to a bonus level. On top of having more equipment to get, this gives you a chance to find a statue. If you have a feeling one is in there. Pick up the curse first then jump in and don’t take a tumble. You fall down in there you will have a random piece of equipment break.

After The Run

At some point you will lose, that’s ok. Assess how you did and what you unlocked. What do you need to improve on, but also what did you do well? Maybe picking another character class can help you do better. Because if you played offensively you might want to consider a class to help you play like that. The same goes for the defensive types. Did you complete a quest, but not to the reward? That’s ok rewards stack up to 4. So you might be able to increase your chances of a win by making sure you have upgraded gear and extra money.

That’s pretty much all I have for tips for Mortal Sin. To those that just bought the game I hope this helps you. If anyone else has good general advice share it! I also might come back to the guide to make things more noticeable for people like underlining and making key things bold, but we will see. Thanks for reading!
