I was watching the A’s game on Friday night, and it started out great. By the fourth inning, Nick Kurtz was already just a triple short of hitting for the cycle. The team had a huge lead. I thought for sure he would go for it.
He Just Couldn’t Stop
Then, something else happened. Something I’ve never seen before. Kurtz just couldn’t keep the ball in the yard. He came up to bat in the sixth and hit his second homer of the night. Then he hit a third in the eighth. I thought that was incredible. But he got one last chance in the ninth, and he homered again.
He forgot the cycle. Instead, he did something much, much rarer.
Witnessing Pure History
I quickly realized I was watching one of the greatest performances in baseball history. He went a perfect 6-for-6 with four home runs. No rookie in MLB history had ever done that. No player in the A’s entire franchise history had ever done that. He tied the all-time record for total bases in a game. The names he’s now being compared to are legends like Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams. It was just unreal.
A Perfect Sports Moment
The reaction in the stadium said it all. His own teammates were just laughing in disbelief. By the end, even the Astros fans were on their feet, giving him a standing ovation. I saw his family in the stands, just losing their minds with joy.
It was one of those pure, perfect moments you rarely get to see in sports. A game that started with the hope of seeing a cycle ended with me witnessing history. I’m still not sure it has fully set in.
