Actor Robert De Niro issued a stark condemnation of Donald Trump in a recent interview, labeling the former president a “monster” and a “criminal” while urging Americans to vote for Kamala Harris in what he described as a “do or die moment for America”. Fresh off a campaign appearance for the Harris-Walz ticket in Pennsylvania, De Niro warned that a second Trump presidency would lead to “chaos beyond our imagination” and that democracy itself is at risk.

On Trump’s Character and Fitness for Office
De Niro did not mince words when describing his view of the former president, calling him a “sick, genuinely a sick person that somehow has been allowed into our system”. He stated there is “not one redeeming thing” about Trump and that he would “never” agree to portray him in a film.
Drawing a historical parallel, De Niro compared those who do not take Trump’s rhetoric seriously to people in Germany who initially dismissed Hitler. “Don’t take him seriously. He looks like a clown and acts like a clown,” De Niro said, adding, “what he says is what it will be if he becomes president”. The actor also believes a second Trump term would lead to “civil strife” and conflict in the streets as Americans push back against his actions.
Forceful Endorsement of Kamala Harris
De Niro framed the election as a simple choice, stating his primary reason for campaigning for Harris is that he “can’t sit by and allow this to happen”. He called Harris “the only answer at this point” and a “great answer” who is “doing what’s right”.
He drew a sharp contrast between the two candidates on the issue of character. “He’s a criminal. Kamala Harris is not a criminal. Joe Biden is not part of a crime family,” De Niro stated. He argued that for anyone who cares about “sanity,” the choice is clear: “You have to vote for her. You have to, that’s it. End of story”.
Plea to Undecided Voters
De Niro made a direct appeal to undecided voters, urging them to “stop and think for a minute” when they are alone in the voting booth and “do the right thing”. He suggested that voters should vote their conscience, even if it means not telling a spouse or significant other who may feel strongly about Trump.
He argued that Trump and the current Republican party are “destroying the idea of the American dream” and pushing white supremacy. His closing argument to those still in doubt was to compare the two candidates’ motivations: “[Trump is] for himself… She says she’s for and she is for, it’s for the people, the American people”.
Robert De Niro on Donald Trump: “It’s about right and wrong. Period. The guy’s a monster. It’s beyond wrong. It’s almost like he wants to do the most horrible things that he can think of. It’s fucking scary.”
