A significant tsunami warning in Japan has prompted authorities to ask more than two million people to evacuate. The warnings (Fukushima Nuclear Plant on high alert❗) are concentrated in the Hokkaido and Tohoku regions, with advisories in place for other coastal areas. The alert has triggered widespread disruption and put nations across the Pacific on high alert.
☢️ Fukushima Nuclear Plant on High Alert
All eyes are on the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the site of the 2011 nuclear meltdown. The plant’s operator, TEPCO, has confirmed that all workers have been safely evacuated from the facility.
Crucially, the company reported that no abnormalities have been detected at the plant. The situation is being monitored closely, as many precautionary measures have been implemented since the catastrophic tsunami in 2011, which was triggered by a magnitude 9 earthquake.

Residents in the affected areas have been instructed to seek high ground immediately and stay away from the coast. In some parts of Hokkaido, people have been seen taking refuge on the rooftops of buildings. The emergency has caused major disruption to train lines, and some flights have been cancelled.
While the highest wave recorded so far was 1.3 meters in northeastern Japan, authorities warn that subsequent tsunami waves could reach up to 3 meters high. Evacuation orders will remain in place until all warnings and advisories are officially lifted.
🌏 Tsunami Threat Spreads Across the Pacific
The tsunami threat extends far beyond Japan. A threat alert has been issued for several nations in the South Pacific, including Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu.
Chinese authorities have also issued a tsunami alert for Zhejiang Province and Shanghai, where waves of up to 1 meter are expected. These coastal areas in China are already dealing with the impact of Typhoon Koinu, compounding the danger for the region.
