A second death has been confirmed in connection with a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in New York City. The ongoing public health crisis, centered in the Harlem neighborhood, has now sickened more than 50 people, with 58 cases diagnosed so far.
Health officials are actively investigating the source of the outbreak of the severe form of pneumonia. Legionnaires’ disease is caused by the Legionella bacterium, which is typically found in water systems and can spread when people breathe in contaminated aerosolized water droplets. Local authorities are urging anyone in the affected area experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath to seek immediate medical attention.
