- Timeline and Location: The incident began at approximately 4:50 PM at 1600 Clifton Road, at the intersection with CDC Parkway. The conflict was centered at the CVS drugstore located next to the CDC campus.
- The Incident: Officers from multiple agencies responded to a report of an active shooter. Upon arrival, they found an injured officer and could still hear gunfire coming from inside the CVS. Officers entered the building and later found the shooter on the 2nd floor. The suspect had been struck by gunfire and passed away at the scene. It is not yet known if the fatal wound was self-inflicted or from police.
- Officer’s Condition: One DeKalb County police officer was critically injured by gunfire at the scene. He was immediately extracted and transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. DeKalb County officials are with the officer’s family and are expected to provide a further update on their condition.
- Suspect Status: The lone shooter, identified as a white male, is now deceased. Officials stated he was a “known person” and that while the investigation into his motive is still in the preliminary stages, more information is expected to be released in “short order.”
- Civilian Status: Officials confirmed that no civilians were shot during the incident. The CDC campus buildings were struck by multiple rounds, but no one on campus was injured. Four other individuals later went to the hospital to be treated for symptoms of stress and anxiety.
- CDC Daycare: 92 children who were at a daycare center on the CDC campus are confirmed to be safe and unharmed. A reunification plan is underway to connect the children with their families at a nearby school.
- Investigation: The Atlanta Police Department (APD) is the lead investigating agency, with the FBI and other state and local partners assisting. The area remains an active crime scene, and the public is asked to stay away while the investigation proceeds.
