Did you know you can help save an endangered species? In Sydney’s Chowder Bay, marine scientists and local divers are working together to protect the endangered White’s seahorse. This amazing project combines science with citizen power to rebuild a struggling population.

How the Project Works: The Seahorse Hotels 🏨
The White’s seahorse, also known as the Sydney seahorse, has suffered from habitat loss. To combat this, researchers from the Sydney Institute of Marine Science and other organizations are releasing baby seahorses into special artificial habitats called “Seahorse Hotels.”
- Breeding Success: The program, which started in 2020, has an incredible 90% survival rate for the captive-bred seahorses, compared to just 1% in the wild. This is a huge win for the species!
- Seahorse Tracking: Each seahorse is given a unique fluorescent ‘tattoo’ called a visual implant elastomer tag. This allows divers and researchers to monitor their survival and movements.
You Can Be a Citizen Scientist! 👩🔬
The project is all about community involvement. Scuba divers and snorkelers can submit photos of any seahorses they find to help scientists monitor the population. This is a great example of how we can all make a real difference in protecting our oceans.
While you’re exploring the area, you might also spot other cool marine life. Chowder Bay is known for rare visitors like ghost pipefish, mantis shrimp, and frogfish of all sizes and colors. It’s a fantastic spot for a dive or snorkel, and you get to contribute to a great cause at the same time.
